The winter “beta” test on what we affectionately call the “rain hats” seems to have proven the old saying that dry bees are alive bees. They (the rain covers) all stayed put over the winter and the straps did the job against any wind storms.
Snow and rain just slides off – we did discover that the fit between the telescoping lid and the rain hat was too tight a seal and in some of the hives there was too much moisture trapped up there. It didn’t impact the bees because of the inner cover protecting the colony from any humidity trapped under the lid, but definitely some mold in the corners. All cleaned up well and the solution is to just fit some additional blocks inside the telescoping lid to give it just a enough for better air flow.
